The next United Tenantry meeting is on Nov. 1 at 8 p.m.

The main agenda
item of this meeting will be to develop a strategy to solve the problems
in one particular apartment building in Takoma Park that is poorly
managed by an abusive landlord with a long, egregious history.

WE WILL ALSO SPEND SOME TIME ON THE REGULAR BUSINESS OF UNITED TENANTRY
such as the mission statement, bylaws, and division of labor.
All tenants in Maryland are invited to come and discuss their situations.
We aim to be a union for the tenants of Maryland and to use our strength
in numbers to keep our homes and have them maintained in good condition
for reasonable, affordable rents.

The meeting will take place at CASA DE MARYLAND at 310 TULIP AVE.,
MAPLE AND TULIP, SECOND FLOOR OF THE MAPLE AVE. ENTRANCE of the church,
NOV. 1, 8 P.M. The church is within walking distance of the Metro. Walk
up Carroll to Maple, turn left and go to Tulip. The entrance is just
past Tulip.

WE WILL NOT HAVE ANOTHER MEETING IN NOVEMBER due to the Thanksgiving
holiday. Our regular meetings are on the 3rd Thursday of each month.

At our last meeting a large group of tenants from one particular
building in Takoma Park attended. They reported on terrible conditions,
lack of response and repairs by the landlord, and poor and ineffective
action on the part of the city code enforcement division.
We planned the next meeting, November 1, 8 p.m. to focus on making this
as a case for United Tenantry, thus saving all the tenants of the
building from risk of losing their homes. It will be safe for all
tenants to attend this meeting. The more tenants to come, the easier it
will be for UT to act effectively. Please, spread the word among your
neighbors. I am not naming the building here because of the risk due to
the public nature of the internet.

On Oct. 22, the T.P. City Council passed an amendment to the rent
stabilization ordinance with language adjusted exactly as United Tenantry
had called for. This thanks to the hard work of members Christopher,
Edwin, Catherine, William, Ellen, Elizabeth, Stephanie, Donna, Phil,
Joseph, Dan, Maria, and Ming. Extra thanks to Christopher, Stephanie,
William, and Ming for distributing fliers. Extra thanks to Maria for
printing fliers. Extra thanks to Catherine for setting up and managing
the list-serve. Extra thanks to Ellen for making phone calls. And extra
thanks to Edwin for taking his case to Code Enforcement and
Landlord-Tenant Relations and the City Council.
